Every year during Navratri, Gurugram’s older sectors turn into open-air theatres. Local Ramleela samitis build stages on public maidans and perform the story of Ram over nine to ten evenings, ending with the burning of Ravan, Meghnad and Kumbhakaran effigies on Dussehra. The city’s biggest gatherings happen in Sector 12, Shivpuri, Sector 44, Bhim Nagar and Jharsa, and this guide lists where to go and what to expect at each ground.

When do Ramleela shows happen in Gurgaon?

Performances run through Sharad Navratri, which falls in September or October depending on the Hindu calendar. Most grounds start their show between 7 pm and 8 pm and wind up by 10:30 pm or so. The final night, Dussehra, is the big one: effigies go up around sunset and the grounds get far more crowded than on regular evenings, so reach early if you are taking children.

What to expect

These are community-run events, not ticketed productions. Entry is free at the grounds listed below, seating is first come first served (carpets or plastic chairs at most venues), and food stalls selling chaat, golgappe and chai spring up around every maidan. Parking near the older sector markets is tight on peak evenings, so an auto or a drop-off works better than bringing a car. Announcements are in Hindi, and the performances mix scripted dialogue with songs the whole crowd knows.

Tips for Dussehra evening

Effigy burning draws the year’s biggest crowds, and the fireworks inside the effigies are loud; keep some distance with toddlers and elderly visitors. Phone networks slow down near the larger grounds on Dussehra night, so fix a meeting point with your group in advance. If you only have one evening, the Sector 12 and Shivpuri grounds are the two most established gatherings in the old city.

Watching a Ramleela in Gurgaon: what to expect

Gurgaon’s Ramleelas run through the nine nights of Navratri, from neighbourhood stages built on sector greens to large committee productions with professional troupes, elaborate sets and sound. Performances typically begin after 8 pm and build to the Dussehra finale, when the Ravan Dahan follows the final act.

Going with family

  • Weeknight audiences are thinner, if you want kids to actually see the stage, go midweek rather than on the final weekend.
  • Seating is first come, first served at most venues; carry a mat or sheet for ground seating at the smaller ones.
  • Food stalls cluster around the bigger stages, so an early dinner is optional, the chaat is part of the experience.
  • The final two nights are the fullest; park at a distance and walk in.

The tradition behind the stage

Ramleela as performed across north India dramatises the Ramcharitmanas over successive nights, with local volunteers often playing roles their families have held for generations at the older stages. The newer committee productions add LED backdrops and recorded scores, but the arc of the nine nights is the same everywhere, which is why you can drop in on any evening and follow the story.
