Gurgaon does not get snow, it gets fog, fairy lights and an entirely serious plum cake economy. From mid-December the city’s bakeries, malls and churches run a two-week festival of their own, and knowing where to look makes the season. Here is the local map.

The cake question

Every serious bakery in the city bakes for Christmas, rum-soaked plum cakes that spent weeks maturing, stollen and yule logs at the European-style counters, and eggless versions that have become their own tradition. Order by the third week of December; the good counters sell out of the aged cakes first. Our guide to where to buy Christmas cakes and goodies in Gurgaon tracks the counters worth the trip, and the city’s best bakeries list covers the rest of the year.

Markets, carnivals and the mall circuit

Expect pop-up Christmas markets and carnivals through the second half of December, craft stalls, Santa corners for the kids, carol evenings, with the malls running the biggest installations and the condominium clubs hosting the cosier ones. Entry is mostly free; the ticketed events are the kids’ carnivals. For a full day out, pair a market visit with the decorations run at the big malls.

Midnight mass and quieter traditions

The city’s churches hold carol services through Christmas week and midnight mass on the 24th, visitors are welcome, dress warmly and arrive early for a seat. If your Christmas is more about the table, the hotel brunches on the 25th are the city’s most lavish of the year, and they book out, reserve ahead. See our Sunday brunch guide for the venues that do it best.

Make a plan

  • Order cakes by 18-20 December; collect on the 23rd to beat the counter queues.
  • Carnival evenings jam the mall parking, metro plus auto is the saner route.
  • Christmas Eve dinner reservations in Cyber Hub and Sector 29 go first, book the week before.
