Between mid-November and February, Gurgaon’s weather turns from adversary to amenity, and the city remembers it has lawns. Winter picnics here are an institution: oranges, a thermos of chai, a badminton set nobody can find the shuttle for. These are the kinds of spots that do it best, and how to pick between them.

City parks for the easy afternoon

For a two-hour picnic without planning, the big public parks and the leafier sector greens are unbeatable, reachable, free and at their best between noon and 4 pm when the winter sun does its work. Weekends fill by lunchtime, so stake out shade-adjacent lawn early. Our guide to the best parks and gardens in Gurgaon has the full list, and the pet-friendly parks guide covers where the dog can come too.

Sultanpur for the birds

Winter is exactly when Sultanpur National Park earns its reputation: the wetland fills with migratory birds through the cold months, and a morning walk around the lake with binoculars is the best nature outing within half an hour of the city. Go early, carry water, and check opening days before driving out, the park keeps a weekly closed day. Read our Sultanpur bird sanctuary guide before you go.

Farms and day-trip lawns

For the full-day version, the farm venues towards Sohna Road and the Aravalli edge sell winter packages, lawns, lunch, village games, bonfires as the sun drops. They work especially well for big family groups and office outings because someone else handles the food. See Lohagarh Farms for the template of the genre.

The winter picnic kit

  • Mat or durrie, the grass stays dew-damp till late morning.
  • Layers over one heavy jacket; noon is warm, 4:30 pm is not.
  • Chai in a flask beats cold drinks from November to February.
  • Carry your litter back, the parks that stay nice are the ones picnickers keep nice.
